Abstract

The concept of happiness in counseling and psychotherapy is often entangled in clinical reductionism, where it is merely defined as the absence of mental illness. This article aims to dissect the application of the happiness concept in therapeutic practices through the lens of the philosophy of science, encompassing ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions. Utilizing a descriptive-philosophical analysis method, this study finds that the application of happiness marks a paradigm shift from a pathological-curative model toward a salutogenic-positive model. Ontologically, happiness transforms from mere hedonic pleasure into eudaimonic actualization. Epistemologically, happiness is operationalized through both measurable positivistic approaches and subjective-existential phenomenological approaches. Axiologically, the application of this happiness concept provides pragmatic value in the form of enhanced resilience and relapse prevention. This article concludes that integrating happiness as the primary orientation of therapy is capable of enhancing optimal and holistic human functioning. Furthermore, the integration of contemporary psychology with Islamic perspectives fosters a deeper form of counseling and psychotherapy—one that achieves not only psychological happiness but also touches upon the profound innermost dimensions of the soul.
